Are there such things as guardian angels? This is a common question that I have been asked over the years. While concrete evidence of such beings is not available, many people have remarkable stories of how angels have helped them. One would have to conclude that sometimes angels have helped us.
Our family just recently had one of these remarkable encounters that left us all thanking God for his remarkable timing and protection. Stephanie took Ben and Dan to a play at a theater in downtown Pontiac. During intermission the boys went to the restroom but Ben didn't return. Where's Ben?
Well, as we learned later, a lot of drama was taking place. Ben loves to explore and when he saw the stairway to the third floor he ran up and discovered a gray door on the third floor. He found the door unlocked and proceeded on to the roof of the building. Then the door slammed shut without a way to reopen it. He was stuck on the roof in the early evening.
Meanwhile, as we were later informed, a deranged man with a crow bar entered a restaurant across the street from the theater. He was brandishing the crow bar and the police were called. When they arrived the man ran into the street where he was about to be caught when the policeman heard a cry from the rooftop. Ben was just able to see over the roof and yell for help. One little head bobbing up and down high above the street.
The police helped the man with the crow bar and proceeded to instruct Ben to be calm and assured him they would be up to rescue him. Soon all was over and Ben was safe.
Just think of all that happened. One little boy with too much curiosity, one troubled man with a crow bar, one late evening in the city, and police who were doing one thing and then another. While all worked out well, our family was shocked to imagine what might have happened. Ben could have been on that roof all night! The play might have been interrupted with a cry of distraught mother wondering if her boy had been abducted. So many possibilities.
But no worries. He was rescued safely and has learned a big lesson. The whole family is thanking God for His protection. We're thinking angles were protecting Ben. He was off the roof and back in his seat for the second part of the play.
The Bible teaches us that angels are sent to guard and protect us. It's likely we're unaware of most of these activities but not this time. Psalm 91:11 says, "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone." ESV
No angels were seen but thoughtful people at the restaurant, passers by on the street, and the police all worked together to help our grandson out of a difficult saturation. I think angels were watching over him! We are thankful.
